Marc Ducret - Tower, vol.1

Bruce Lee Galanter, DMG Newsletter

Real Thing #1 is long and it features the spirited trumpet work of Mr. Tranberg & the spiky guitar of Ducret with the trombone and bass sax playing some twisted yet intricate harmonies. Ducret does a great job of writing complex crisscrossing lines for all of the members of the quintet. Each of the three long pieces is filled with different sections keeping the quintet on their toes as each pieces evolves through varied combinations. Ducret plays a few Frippish sustained solos and seems to wear his Zappa-like influence (humor & unexpected changes in direction) on his sleeve. Marc Ducret, who use to collaborate with Tim Berne quite a bit in the past, sounds like a downtowner at heart. His music is both loose and tight at the same time and free of any sort of neat pigeonholing that many music critics would stick him in. Looking forward to 'Tower, Vol. 2'
