Stone Quartet is an all-star free improvisation quartet first put together in 2006. It consists of bassist Joëlle Léandre, trumpeter Roy Campbell, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and violist Mat Maneri. This group’s performances are few and far between, and Live at Vision Festival is their second release, recorded in June 2010. A 40-minute set of two pieces filled with invention, humility, and thrilling interaction. Quartet Noir had well established the chemistry between Léandre and Crispell, so my focus stayed on the chemistry between Léandre and Maneri, just as fantastic. Strongly, strongly recommended.

Le Stone Quartet est un groupe d’improvisation de haute voltige créé en 2006. Il consiste en Joëlle Léandre (contrebasse), Roy Campbell (trompette), Marilyn Crispell (piano) et Mat Maneri (alto) – que des grosses pointures. Ce groupe se produit rarement. Live at Vision Festival est son second disque, enregistré en concert en juin 2010. Un set de 40 minutes en deux pièces étalant des trésors d’invention, d’humilité et d’interactions passionnantes. Depuis le Quartet Noir, on sait que la magie passe entre Léandre et Crispell. C’est donc celle qui se produit entre Léandre et Maneri qui fascine sur ce disque très chaudement recommandé.
