At
ayler records, we love art. Not just music,
but all art forms.
You might have noticed that we've always tried to be consistent
with the design of our cover art, based on the paintings of
Åke Bjurhamn.
But photography is also part of the picture (so to speak
),
and when it comes to documenting the sessions or live shows
we record, photographers like Heiko Purnhagen
are our invaluable allies.
Some of the people we've dealt with over the years, like Jean-Luc
Guionnet and Steve Dalachinsky, are also
involved in art forms other than music.
We're pleased to take the opportunity to present some of their
work on this section of our website.
Choose from the list below, and enjoy!

Heiko
Purnhagen
Towards concert photography...
My interest in photography started for real at the age
of 17, when I took a borrowed single-lens reflex (SLR)
camera with me on a one week school trip on board of a
traditional sailing vessel. A bit later I got my own SLR
camera, which followed me on countless trips and journeys
and taught me some of the fundamentals of photography.
When moving from Germany to Sweden in 2002, I switched
to a digital compact camera, basically because it makes
sharing pictures so much easier in the age of the Internet.
And I soon learned to appreciate the immediate feedback
on a monitor, since it now became much easier to experiment
and try something odd or new.
Moving to Stockholm enabled me also to explore the innovative
Jazz scene in the north of Europe. Soon, I became a regular
at the Glenn Miller Café, a unique jazz club here
in Stockholm, and started traveling to various Jazz festivals
in Norway. However, trying to take pictures at such concerts
with a compact camera is a frustrating exercise, especially
if you want to capture the atmosphere with available light,
and don't want to disturb the situation with a flash.
Being tired of these limitations, and longing for looking
through a "real" viewfinder again, I switched
back to an SLR camera again, a digital one now, once they
became affordable.
With this camera and some nice lenses, I got really hooked
on concert photography. Finally, there is a chance to
capture the atmosphere of live performances and get portraits
of musicians that really mean something to me.
And sometimes I even get a picture that I'm willing to
show...
