| | Noah Howard appears as the leader on the debut CD from Ayler Records. Noah Howard was born April 6, 1943 in New Orleans, LA and he had his first musical education in a Baptist church in New Orleans. He started with trumpet but changed quite soon to his main instrument, alto saxophone. His first influences were musicians like Byron Allen, Sonny Simmons and Dewey Redman. However, in the same way as one can imagine a possible development of Charlie Parker's musical creativity in Jimmy Lyons playing, one may draw the same parallel from Johnny Hodges' in Noah Howard's playing. It is the same basic, melodic and "bluesy" approach but Noah Howard had the advantage to be in that generation of musicians who became allowed to break the "rules" and bring the music into more free structures. The main creators of this new music in the 50's and 60's were Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Sunny Murray and John Coltrane. Noah Howard's recordings from the 70's show a strong influence from his close friend Albert Ayler - the melodic, march resembling themes followed by free and energy loaded solos. Today, Noah Howard's playing is mature and he fluently draws the listeners impressions through the complete history of jazz. He lives in Belgium but has the whole world as his stage. | |
